A poem reflecting on snippets of my childhood dealing with abuse, dissociation, religious indoctrination, self-harm, and homophobia.
As a child, none of the adults in my life caught what was really going on; I was being sexually abused by a family member and in turn, repeatedly blamed for it.

If you've experienced something similar, please know that it is not your fault. There is nothing is wrong with you. Horrible things happened to you but that does not make you a horrible person.

"There's something wrong with Sarah,"
I hear my parents say
"She's always in a daydream, far from reality
Maybe
She has a hearing disability

Her grades are getting worse this year
She really should be tested
For learning disabilities
Yes, that's it
A label
To cover all these red flags:

She ignores the tutor
When she's taught one-on-one
Lays her head on the desk in front of her
And shuts down
Withdrawing from everyone

There's something wrong with Sarah
At night, she's wetting the bed
We should get her pull-ups
Strange
How she's regressing instead

There's something wrong with Sarah
Teachers found her in a hall at school
Performing oral sex on boys
At nine years old...
How unusual

There's just something wrong with her
Why would she egg them on?
She needs to stop
This is all her fault
Clearly,
Something's off

There's something wrong with Sarah
She started hurting herself again
She cuts her arms with broken bits of plastic
Found in the kitchen bin

The other day,
I caught her looking at a women's lingerie ad
She knows better than that, it's not the Lord's way
I told her not to go down that path

She's cut off all her hair
and is 'dressing like a boy'
It's odd
How much she wants to make herself
Something to avoid

It's like she wants to be ignored
She's making herself ugly on purpose
Maybe God just gave us a
Troubled
Broken girl
Who's hopeless
