Creating a Daylight System - 3D Rendering with Vray for 3DS Max | Black Spectacles

In this course, Jorge Barrero from Gensler will show you how to create beautiful renderings with Vray for 3ds Max.

We're going to move on to setting up our lighting for the scene now that we have our render settings on place and our Max settings all set up as well. So when we start thinking about lighting and setting up a scene, one of the things that I like to do is work in tandem to set up the exposure in the camera. So we're going to talk a little bit about cameras later on. But I will touch on a quick sort of item here as we get things going. But to get started on lighting specifically, usually, I like to keep my lights on their own layer so that's one of the things that I will do here in Max.

I will go ahead and I am going to add a new layer. So on the layer manager on the left, I'm going to click on create a new layer, and I'm just going to call this one 0-lights. And usually, I like to put a zero in front of it so that at least it gets brought to the top and it's easy to find. You can see in my layer management, everything that's geometry has a 3-D in front of it. And everything that is supporting of the scene has a different character just to help keep things nice and neat. So under lights, my layer is current. There's multiple ways of doing ambient and global illumination lighting in V-Ray. The one I'll start with is the daylight system.

And the daylight system has been around Max for a long time but was never really integrated with V-Ray up until V-Ray 2.0. And so, it's a really easy way to set up what is a V-Ray sun and sky system within Max. And what we're setting up is a physical simulated sun that will be rendering our scene. So on the right-hand side, I'm going to go to the create tab which is the first tab here with the yellow sun-like icon. And the third one to the right, it's called lights and the drop-down menu has photo metric, standard, and V-Ray. This is where you access all your V-Ray lights. You can see here there's a V-Ray sun. And that's really what we want but if I click on this one and insert this one, it really will only give me that particular sun light or V-Ray light, but I have to manually place it.

One of the nice things here with the daylight system is I want to tie it to location and the time of day and that sort of scenario, which is a little bit more realistic in terms of getting accurate results if you're trying to match shadows from a photograph or things of that nature. So I'm going to go to the create tab here at the top and then I'm going to go all the way down here under systems and then I'm going to go to daylight system. So you can see there the sequence to get to it. When I click on the daylight system, the right-hand side you can see it switched to daylight. So you can also get to it from here, from systems and daylight system. So there's a lot of redundancy in these menus and the top menu. So you can get to either or but it's the same thing.

And so right now after I created it, you can see on the bottom left, it says click and drag to create its own system. And so it's prompting me to do that. So I'm going to do it here on the side so you can see it. I'm going to left click and then I'm going to drag my cursor slightly just to get that compass rose on the ground. And then when you let go of the click, it prompts you to say, "Hey. Do you want to create a Mental ray sky?" We are using a V-Ray sky with V-Ray light, so in this case I'm going to say "No". And then it prompts you to set the sunlight icon itself. So just kind of drag a little bit and click. And when you're done, just right-click and we're done.

And so, when I orbit, you can see there is my daylight system, which is comprised of a compass that will basically set the north orientation and we can adjust that and then also the actual sunlight which is up in the sky. And one of the things to keep in mind here is the location of the system in relationship to your scene, it's irrelevant. It does not matter if it's way off in the distance, if it's on top of your model, it really does not matter. Just put it where you see it, where it's easy to understand what's going on. And don't worry about the sunlight or the sun icon being too far away from your model or too close to the model. Again, it has no impact on the lighting solution. It's purely graphical.
