The third type of datum that we're going to deal with is levels. Now, levels are not visible in floor plans; however, they are visible in elevations. Before we go any further, notice that the grids are also visible in the elevations. So this is just to prove that not only our reference planes, planes, but grids are actually planes as well. Grids are not just lines, they are physical planes that slice through your project. And so you'll see those grids in elevations, in sections, in plans, wherever Revit can "see" them. Now, we can raise these grids up like that but what we're really concerned about here are these two levels. Now, what we need to do is we're going to create a new level. If you skip to the last page, the "A6.1," you can see that we've got a "Level 1" which is at the 635. We've got a pool level which is at 631 but then there's another level in that view that's listed as "Roof" that's at 644, and so what we need to do is create that new level.
So to create a new level, we're going to go to "Architecture" and you're going to click on "Level" right here, and just like... and if this pops up, you can just cancel it. It's just a reminder that you should save the file as you go. We're going to create a new level and we're going to adjust... just like we did with the grids, we're going to draw it first and adjust its position later. So just like with the grids also, it has this alignment line. So I'm just going to go ahead and click and then stretch that level all the way across and have it at the same position as the other two levels.
Now, if I zoom in there, you can see that it automatically named it "Level 3." I don't want it to be called "Level 3," I want it to be called "Roof." So what we need to do is click on where it says "Level 3" and change that to say "Roof." And then click outside the box. Now, when it says this, in this particular case, I have the view that's being created. It has that "Level 3" name so it's asking do I want to also rename the view that's related to this level and in this case, I want to say, "Yes."
So now, if I go over here to the project browser, that's a new view that was created. So it goes under the question marks. And so you can see that it also created a reflected ceiling plan for that level as well even though we don't need it. And so I'm going to go ahead and click on "Floor Plan Roof" in the project browser and I'm going to move it to "Floor Plans Working Views," and then hit "Apply." And so now I have the roof plan down here where I need it.
And that's how you create a level. However, there's a couple of other things that relate to datums that I want to talk to you about. So I've shown you reference plans, I've shown you grids and levels. I said that there was four datums in Revit. The fourth datum in Revit is not available in project files. It is only available in family files which we'll talk about later today, that is a reference line. And so a reference line is very different than a reference plane and reference lines are only available inside families. So in projects, there's just the three, reference planes, grids, and levels.
